Focus training

Published

It’s easy to get caught up in winning every roll in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We all want to hit our favorite submissions, sweep our training partners, and come out on top. But if you’re always relying on the techniques you already know, you might be missing valuable opportunities to improve your game.

One of the best ways to get better at BJJ is to go into each training session with a purpose. Pick one technique, position, or specific area of your game to focus on during your rolls. Maybe you’re working on escaping side control, improving your guard retention, hitting a particular sweep, or setting up a submission. Instead of worrying about winning the round, look for opportunities to practice what you’re learning.

You’re not always going to hit the technique perfectly, and that’s okay. You might get countered, lose position, or have to start over. Those moments are part of the learning process. Pay attention to what went wrong, make adjustments, and keep looking for the next opportunity to try again.

Remember, rolling is more than just winning or losing. It’s an opportunity to test your skills against a resisting partner, identify weaknesses, and develop better timing and technique. The more intentional you are with your training, the more you’ll get out of every round.

Next time you step on the mats, give yourself one thing to work on. Be patient, embrace the mistakes, and trust the process. You don’t have to win every round to make progress. Sometimes, the most valuable rounds are the ones where you struggle, learn something new, and walk away a little better than you were before.
