Match Format

Submission only. No points.

Regulation matches run for six minutes. There are no points: win inside regulation by submission.

If there is no submission, competitors go to EBI-style positional overtime. A coin toss decides who picks the starting position, and the winner picks mount or back control.

Overtime rounds are capped at three minutes and are decided by submission, fastest submission time, or fastest escape time. If neither athlete submits, the published rules specify single-elimination rock-paper-scissors.

Skill Level

Beginner

Up to 2 years of experience; white belts only.

Skill Level

Intermediate

2–5 years of experience, or blue belt.

Skill Level

Advanced

More than 5 years of experience, or purple belt and above.

Confirm Eligibility Before Paying

Smoothcomp publishes two different age statements.

The paid-division summary lists 18+, while the official rules say teens age 16 and older may enter adult divisions with parent or coach permission. Athletes under 18 should call the organizer at 717-350-8554 before registering.

Division Notes

Choose the correct experience level.

Wrestling, judo, sambo, and MMA experience count toward placement.

Three or more high-school wrestling years, or any college wrestling experience, must be counted.

Men age 30+ may enter a 30+ division or an adult men's division, but not multiple age divisions.

Men's and women's divisions are separate.

What To Bring

Competition apparel and safety.

The published rules say gis are optional, but athletes must wear a tight-fitting T-shirt or rashguard.

Mouthpieces and groin protection are optional but recommended.

Do not apply oils, lotions, or lubricants. Athletes with infectious skin disease or open wounds cannot compete.

Official Submission-Only Tournament Rules

Rules athletes need before stepping on the mat

This is a plain-language summary of the organizer's official rules. The Smoothcomp rules page controls if any wording changes.

The organizer publishes these as “General Rules” and “Submission Grappling (No Gi) Rules.” Only the overtime procedure is EBI-style; the organizer does not publish the full ruleset under that name, and the local procedure above is what controls.

General rules

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct can lead to disqualification or ejection. Referee decisions are final.
  • No striking, biting, eye gouging, headbutting, small-joint manipulation, hair pulling, windpipe grabbing, or ear pulling.
  • No slamming. Slamming from guard or to escape a submission or pass is an automatic disqualification; takedowns must return the opponent safely to the mat.
  • No infectious skin disease, open wounds, oils, lotions, or lubricants.
  • Action may continue across the matted area when it does not interfere with another match. Edge restarts preserve the position when the referee can reproduce it.
  • Fleeing the ring to escape a locked submission is an automatic disqualification.

No-gi submissions and apparel

  • Novice, beginner, intermediate, and 30+ divisions: the only legal submissions below the waist are straight ankle locks (straight footlocks) and kneebars.
  • Advanced men's and women's divisions allow all submissions. Neck cranks, spine locks, biceps or calf slicers, and flying-scissors takedowns are advanced-only.
  • Do not grab any clothing, including your own. The published rules say gis are optional, but competitors must wear a tight-fitting T-shirt or rashguard.
  • Blue belts compete at intermediate or higher. Purple, brown, and black belts compete at advanced.
  • A physical tap, verbal tap, or yell during a submission attempt counts as a submission.
  • An athlete whose match stops for an injury or another non-disqualifying reason has five minutes to return or forfeits.

Ways a match can be won

  • Win by submission inside regulation time.
  • Win in overtime by submission, fastest submission time, or fastest escape time.
  • Win by opponent disqualification.
  • Win by opponent forfeiture.

Competition Rules Versus Class Policy

These are competition rules, not class rules.

The safety expectations overlap and apply on our mats every day: no slamming, deliver takedowns safely, no small-joint manipulation, and no training with an infectious skin condition or open wound.

Everything else here is tournament permission, not class permission. A submission being legal in the advanced divisions does not make it legal to drill or apply in a normal class — your coach decides what you train and who you train it with.
