Before bringing a mouthguard to BJJ, confirm what your class requires and read the instructions for the product you own. Classroom equipment rules and tournament inspection rules are separate checks.

This guide covers those equipment questions. It does not recommend a dental treatment or tell you how to fit a guard around dental appliances.

Identify the product you are considering

The American Dental Association's equipment overview distinguishes three categories:

  • Stock: supplied in a preformed shape.
  • Boil-and-bite: a product with a manufacturer-specified molding process.
  • Custom-made: made through a dental professional.

The category name is not a class requirement or proof that a particular product suits you. Keep the packaging and model information so a product question can be answered accurately. Follow that product's instructions rather than borrowing heating, remolding or trimming directions from a different model.

Ask one clear equipment question

For a first class, ask: “What mouthguard requirements apply to this session, and is there anything I need to arrange before attending?” Confirm the answer for the session you plan to attend.

For a competition, use the organizer's current equipment requirements and ask about the actual product if its status is unclear. A guard used in ordinary practice is not automatically approved for every event. The first-tournament checklist covers registration and the rest of your gear.

Keep the case in the packing routine

Store the product instructions where you can find them. Use the cleaning, drying, storage and replacement directions supplied for that guard and its case. Do not leave the case forgotten inside used clothing between sessions.

Add it to your gear list alongside the uniform and any other equipment the instructor requested. The gear-care guide handles the rest of the bag; this page is the place to resolve the mouthguard requirement before class.
